FAQs about Potty Training Sensory Calming Wands:
Q. Will my child become dependent on the wand in order to release? A. A comparable example would be like learning to ride a bike. A child starts off with training wheels but once they get riding successfully several times, they realize that they don’t actually need the training wheels and will happily ride without. The wand may only be used for a short time, but when you’re in the middle of potty training and it's a highly stressful time, every hour and minute you save helps immensely. In addition, the wands have an additional LED light feature and can be enjoyed by kids of all ages post-potty training!
Q. Who developed the wands? A. The wands were created by a Certified EMDR Therapist (Trauma/PTSD specialty) that understands how the nervous system both inhibits and promotes resolution toward a particular goal. In this case, it’s potty release/potty training. Q. What stage of potty training are these wands ideal for? A. It’s ideal to begin training with the wands to override the fight or flight mode of the nervous system as early into training as possible. But these wands can also help with a child who has regressed, a child who is having intermittent successes but seems reluctant or afraid to release, and especially for children who have experienced withholding trauma or a traumatic experience with potty training at any point in time.
Q. What about using a laxative, wouldn't it provide the same result? A. Using laxative comes with more risks. You risk not knowing when stool will actually come out/getting to the potty in time; you also risk creating a traumatizing experience for your child.
Q. When should I introduce my child to the wands? A. Our recommendation is to wait until you know your child has something to release (and is sitting on the potty) and introduce the wands initially then as they are fascinating enough to provide gentle distraction. The gentle vibrations are a supportive way to relax and distract the body enough to promote release. The combination of relaxation and distraction is what helps a child experience those first few successful releases while minimizing the fear they may experience.
